Decode the Dress Code: Smart Casual

We’re back with another installment of our much-beloved series - "Decode the Dress Code". Today, we're tackling a somewhat ambiguous but increasingly popular term – "Smart Casual". This dress code might sound like an oxymoron, but don’t worry, it’s not as complicated as it sounds. Let's decode!

What is Smart Casual Anyway?

You've likely come across the term "smart casual" in an event invitation, a workplace setting, or perhaps a social gathering. It seems like a balancing act - somehow, you need to find the perfect blend of relaxed yet refined. Simply put, smart casual implies a dressed-down version of formal attire, which is chic, polished, and effortless. However, this dress code does come with its nuances.

I like to explain smart casual to my styling clients as “business casual’s sassy little sister”. Why?  Because similar principles apply to both dress codes BUT smart casual is typically less conservative and more fashion forward.

This is one of those dress codes where juxtaposition is key - that’s precisely why it can be both so confusing and also fun. Think of it as appropriate yet, not dull. Or polished, yet with personality. Smart casual is less of a uniform and leaves room for expression.

However, if you’re a rule follower and ambiguity is your arch nemesis, this dress code can make you crazy. So, lemme try to break down this more artistic aesthetic into a somewhat scientific equation for you.

think of smart casual as business casual’s sassy little sister.

Balancing Smart with Casual

Achieving a smart casual look is all about balance. The concept here is that there needs to be both elements - the smart, (ie appropriate, tailored, conservative) and the casual (ie relaxed, dressed down) co-existing in each outfit. And the density of that element will determine where on the smart to casual spectrum it lands.

If you’re frustrated and shaking your head, know you’re not alone. THIS IS HARD, for most people. Even professionals. Trust me, HR departments have been struggling with this for years. When you add “casual” to the dress code it becomes undefined and subjective. One person's casual is another person's sloppy. And conversely, one person's formal is another persons casual.

I talk on Instagram a lot about using your clothes as tools to dial up or down your outfit. And that is what we need to do with these hybrid dress codes. Remember, the aim is not to look overly formal or too laid back. It's about straddling the line between the two - appearing put-together without sacrificing comfort.

The Smart Casual Essentials

Let's decode the key ingredients of smart casual attire and how to use them to create an outfit that’s comfortable, stylish, and just right for the occasion.

1. Chic Blouses and Tops

Think of silhouettes that are relaxed, yet sophisticated. Silk blouses, crisp cotton shirts, and light, structured knits work brilliantly. Avoid anything overly baggy or distressed. The key here is to appear relaxed but polished.

2. Tailored Trousers or Skirts

Switch the traditional business pants for chinos, dark-colored jeans, or a well-cut skirt. They should be neat and in good condition - no rips, fades, or overly casual elements.

3. Smart Shoes

Footwear is an important element in elevating your smart casual look. Opt for loafers, ballet flats, block heels, or clean, minimalist sneakers. Stay away from flip flops or overly decorated shoes.

4. Polished Layers

Add a blazer or a smart cardigan over your top. This adds structure to your outfit and can help transition your look from daytime to evening effortlessly.

5. Accessories

Use accessories to add a personal touch. Jewelry, scarves, belts, watches, and glasses can provide that extra polish to your ensemble.
