What’s so special about the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale?

It’s that time of year again… The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. If you’re not familiar with this sale (is that even possible??) here’s a quick 411. Unlike of typical sales where mark downs are on PAST season merchandise, The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale  marks down  PRE SEASON items. Like all the things you might need for this upcoming Fall/Winter 2018! And because it’s pre-season there are full size runs, not just the picked over stuff. It’s only for a few weeks in July/August and after that the pieces go UP to their regular price!!

Really, the sale is worth it. You can end up with some key pieces for a lot less – but there are some tricks of the trade I’ll share with you to up your chances of success.

Both personally and when advising clients, I like to approach this sale in a few ways…

Red, White or Rose, You Need to Know About This Wine Gadget…

This is not a fashion post. This is however, something you need to know about, especially if you like wine. I may be making a big leap here but, from comments on IG,  FB and on blog posts, I think many of you guys are winos just like me! A glass of wine (or two) at the end of a day takes the edge off. It makes the frame go a bit fuzzy, not like hard alcohol drunk, just a little happy. A glass, one could argue, can make me a better mom and wife. And my friends like it because I loose a bit of my filter and might say what I’m thinking, even though it should probably stay in my head.

Having a glass of wine is heaven, but drinking a whole bottle alone, that’s waaaay above my tolerance level. When, I’m at home, thinking about having a glass of wine,  I usually pass. WHY? Because I don’t want to open an entire bottle of wine, knowing I’ll only drink a glass or two and the rest will go to waste. By the time I’m ready for another glass that delish bottle of wine will have become vinegar.

Does Any of This Sound Familiar? If So, Then You Will Be Thanking Me for Telling You About This Gadget.

Gifts for Dads and Grads

It’s June, Fathers Day is this weekend and I haven’t gotten my Father’s Day gifts yet. And it’s graduation month too, so basically, I have a list a mile long of gifts I need to get. I think part of my problem is that guys are just not that fun to buy gifts for.  So I wait, hoping something (anything) will pique my interest and seem like the “right” gift for my dad or grad. And now I’m in a rush and need to get Father’s Day gifts ASAP but don’t want to pay for expedited shipping. Does any of this sound familiar? Or are you one of those people that have all their Christmas shopping done in July? If so, I hate you – not really hate, just jealous that you have it so together. I am a true procrastinator when it comes to things in my personal life.

So consider this post for the last minute Charlies, like me, that don’t want it to look like you waited until the last minute to actually get the gift…

In case you didn’t guess, it’s Hallie writing today. Elana is one of those Christmas in July people, love her but, ughhhh.

Father’s Day Gifts that Upgrade His Style

This past week we had 4 different clients asking about a style spruce up for their man. The story’s been kind of the same even though the people, ages, professions and interests are all very different. “My guy needs help when we go out. He’s fine when wearing a suit or going to work. And then he’s got his bum around weekend Cavs/Browns/Indians stuff. But when we go out casually (like not sweats) he is a lost cause.”

Really , that kind of makes sense – men are practical by nature. They NEED things to go to work and they NEED things to be comfortable. But they don’t necessarily feel the need to look put together when they’re taking us out on the town. Elevated casual attire is a no mans land for most people let alone men. You can’t google “going out tops” for men, you know??

East Dane to the Father’s Day rescue…

Throw on jeans and a T-shirt.

The other day we were talking about how nice it is in the summer to be able to just throw on a pair of jeans and a T-shirt and leave the house. No coats, no boots, none of the extra layers. So nice, right? Then the conversation got a little deeper.  We went from talking about how nice it is to throw on jeans and a T-shirt, to where the heck to find good summer T-shirts that aren’t a fortune.  Let’s say T-shirts that are under $25. (Seriously, people when did T-shirts become so pricey?)  T-shirts that you don’t feel bad if you sweat in, get sunblock on, wear to your kids baseball game, get seat belt or kitchen counter holes in,  or dare to say it…dribble chocolate ice cream on. (Yes this just happened, and yes the T-shirt is permanently ruined.) In other words, T-shirts that won’t make you cry if you ruin them.

Do under $25 T-shirts really still exist?

So, where do these under $25 T-shirts hide now a days? The kind that are cute enough to throw on and not feel like a slob, but not so pricey that you feel guilty wearing to just run around on a Tuesday? And what makes these said T-shirts feel un-slob like? Well that’s easy, but finding them hasn’t been so easy. So, here’s the short list of what to look for, and we’ll give you the long list of where to find them. Problem solved. T-shirts under $25 that still feel put together and UN-slob like. Oh, and while we’re at it, here’s a few style tips to help with the UN-slob like thing…

T-Shirt Styling Tips…

Bathing Suit Season has Arrived.

The pools are open which means bathing suit season has arrived. We can look at this two ways…UGH we have to put on a bathing suit after a winter of packing on the pounds, or WAHOO,  we finally get to be outside in bathing suits. For a while we thought that summer was never going to arrive. We were still making cold weather outfits for our clients at the beginning of May, so at the time, the thought of putting on bathing suits and sitting at the beach or the pool (unless on vacation) felt like a distant moment. But, friends, bathing suit season has finally arrived, and we’re here to tell ya’ about one of our new fave bathing suit retailer.  Actually, it isn’t new, but it’s really, really good, and you know we love to talk about GOOD.

Literally, it’s Everything But Water.

Everything But Water is just that. They have everything for the pool and beach. Suits, shoes, hats, cover ups, sun block, bags, they truly are everything minus the water. (They do sell water bottles, though.) Everything But Water has store fronts, so if you’re lucky enough to live in a city that has one (Hallie was at the NYC shop recently), hop on in, but if not, hop online it’s just as good. And truth be told, if you’re like us, it might be even better because you get to try on your picks in the privacy of your own home.

Bathing Suit by Fit.

Bathing suit shopping sucks, but now it doesn’t have to. Listen to this, Everything But Water has a fit guide menu. It works like this… If you have narrow shoulders, click the box, if you have a big booty, click the box, if you have a tummy that needs a little added control, click that box. Click based on your body type, and then wham bam thank you ma’am the perfect fitting suits will pop up. And guess what…IT WORKS!! We tried it, ordered one, and kept it. Give it a try and find your perfect fit. But, in the meantime, check out some of our favorite picks for the summer, suits and all.

The dress cardigan.

After our dress post a few weeks ago we had a some questions from you guys about what to put over a dress. The answer is a dress cardigan. There was a cute little bridal shower dress and we suggested wearing a dress cardigan with it. Here’s where the questions came in…

Q. What’s a dress cardigan? A cardigan that’s dressy, OR a cardigan that you wear over a dress?

A. Plain and simple! It’s one that you wear over a dress. It hits at the perfect spot at your waist. It’s not too long, and not too short. It creates the perfect balance when you’re wearing a dress (or a skirt) and need or want to be covered up. It’s that easy.

Why wear a dress cardigan?

Having dress cardigans on hand in a few colors will take the stress out of trying to figure out what to throw on over your dresses. Let’s say you’re going somewhere where you need to be modest, and covered, or you’re just a freeze baby. Or, you hate your arms (we’ve heard that one plenty of times). Or let’s say it’s just the perfect piece to complete the outfit when a pashmina just won’t do the trick.  All of these are good reasons to have one on hand.

A few good ones to keep on hand…

Valentine’s Day is NOT for Flowers and Chocolate.

Valentine’s Day can stress us out.  Most of the time we wait until the last minute to get dinner reservations and then can’t find a place to go because it’s crowed with young lovers. Or we can’t find babysitters, or don’t trust our kids to be home alone (party?!?) and don’t know what gifts to buy for one another either. Does any of this sound familiar? The guys are sweet, and thoughtful and ask what kinds of gifts to shower us with, but we never know what to say. Valentine’s Day is a made up holiday, so an extravagant gift just doesn’t seem right. But it’s nice to both give and receive a little something thoughtful. So we think, and think some more.  We know that we don’t want flowers because they’re over priced and die, and we don’t want chocolate because, you know, we’d eat it all and then not be happy. “WE” means each and every one of us because this is a common Valentine’s Day theme. So what kind of gifts do WE want?

Gift yourself.
Well, “WE” decided on jewelry. Not the expensive, rare gemstone type. Instead, the fun, costume, brassy, beaded, leathery, inexpensive kind that makes us swoon. These are the pieces that finish off an outfit in an effortless, cool girl kind of way. They say you tried, but not too hard…  The kind of jewelry you can wear with jeans and a t-shirt. The kind that you can buy for yourself without guilt. Leave the carats for your birthday,  and get some of this cool brassy, beaded, leathery stuff. And if you feel so inclined, pick it out,  wrap it up, and sign his name to it. You might even be doing him the favor by taking the guess work out of it.

The Gifts “WE” Want for Valentine’s Day

Wear RED This Friday
The color RED.  It makes us think of love… Red roses, red hearts, Valentines Day – it’s like the poster child color for the month of February. It’s also THE color to wear this Friday, February 2 to show support for the American Heart Association. Why? Because this Friday is GRFW Day (Go Red For Women). The American Heart Association is encouraging people to wear RED to raise awareness about cardiovascular disease and to help save lives. By wearing RED you can join in the fight against heart disease and stroke. It’s a little something you can do to show support, because when we come together, there’s nothing we can’t do.

Picture it – a whole sea of people, nation wide, wearing RED – it’s powerful and it’s pretty – just like women.
Chances are you know someone affected by heart disease and stroke, because about 2200 Americans die of cardiovascular disease each day. That’s in average of one death every forty seconds. Cardiovascular diseases, which includes stroke, claim the lives of about one woman every 80 seconds unnecessarily — because about 80 percent of cardiovascular diseases may be preventable with education and action. Raise awareness and fund the fight against cardiovascular disease and stroke.

Got RED?!?
If your closet is like most peoples, it’s probably somewhat void of color. That’s ok. No judgement here. But, if you want to show your support for heart health by wearing RED, you may need to buy something. Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered… (btw, it’s Hallie writing this week). I scoured the Macy’s website and picked out some fabulous red pieces if you’re on the hunt for something RED, everything is under $250 and most are under $100  – so it’s as easy as 1, 2, click and support.
