New Years Sale Shopping

Happy New Year, you guys! I don’t know if this is just wishful thinking but, it feels like we’re maybe, kinda, sorta, possibly getting closer to a place we can wear cute clothes again… Fingers and toes crossed! So, in the hopes of manifesting more social interactions (gosh, I miss people), I’m looking for some exciting things to pep up the old wardrobe. And what better than New Year’s sale shopping?

There are some CRAZY sale shopping savings happening right now (like up to 70% off!) So, consider this my cliff notes version (oh I really just dated myself – I believe they’re now called spark notes) to the sale stuff that’s out there and that might make a nice addition and help zhuzh up your looks.

There’s not a lot of rhyme or reason to these picks – just pieces that spoke to me. And in my experience, that’s the best way to shop a sale. It’s challenging to go in to a sale (or a thrift or consignment store for that matter) with a specific shopping list, because you’ll never quite know what you’ll find. For folks with shiny object syndrome like me, it’s a blast, and a treasure hunt in it’s truest form. But for those that like a purpose and are uncomfortable veering off course, sale shopping can be overwhelming. Thus, the handy, dandy cliff notes … and some tips.

Tips for Shopping a Sale

Just because it’s hard to shop a sale with a specific list, there can still be a plan of attack. Yes, have items in mind that you want and need to perk up your wardrobe. But if there is a piece that makes your heart soar, that’s not on your list, take time to consider it, thoughtfully.

How to Shop a Sale

Before you hit “add to cart”, ask yourself these questions:

The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale’s Best UNDER $100 Finds

Every year there’s a whole bunch of pomp and circumstance surrounding the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. BIG yellow signs, customer excitement,  early access dates, and special buys for the upcoming season. In some ways, I think it has usurped the role of the big, fat, Vogue September issue as the official marker of Autumn fashion.

While I’ve felt slightly skeptical about this sale in past years, in 2020 I’m finding it’s arrival quite familiar and comforting. Perhaps it’s that many of the items included in the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale are perennial favorites brought back year after year. Or that I know I can stock up on my most worn shoes, pj’s, sweats, makeup, and more at the best prices of the year. So many of my best finds are under $100, even under $50 – The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale has some treasures.

The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale starts NOW

You’re going to see a lot of content from me (and probably other bloggers as well) about the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale over the next couple of weeks.

Why? What’s the Big Deal?

Because this sale, the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, is not like all other sales. Typically sales happen when retailers hit the end of a season and are trying to make space for the new season of merchandise. Basically, a sale means it’s leftovers.

But the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is different. With this sale, fall merchandise (for the upcoming season) is being sold BEFORE the season begins, and at an extreme discount.

What to Keep in Mind when Navigating the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale

Consider this the starter post, sharing the basics of the 2020 sale. The dates to keep in mind and the best strategy to use, so you can get the products you want and need.

Please, don’t waste your precious time or money on a bad buy. If I’ve said it once I’ve said it 1000 times. It is not a good deal just because you get it on sale. If it hangs in your closet with the tags on, it was a waste of money! Period. The end.

Cheers, It’s Time for Summer Sales

Post 4th of July is usually the time in the fashion/retail calendar where the summer stuff goes on major sale. Why? Because stores are trying to clear things out to make way for fall merchandise. Even though this year has been anything but typical. The summer sales are still going strong. So it’s a great way to snag some key pieces at a deep discount.

Don’t Buy It Just Because It’s on Sale

However, my rule for styling clients, and that I’m sharing with you is: DO NOT BUY IT JUST BECAUSE IT’S ON SALE. An item isn’t a deal if it just sits in your closet. If it’s not adding, in a positive way to your wardrobe, it doesn’t belong there.

I can’t tell you the number of times I meet with a first time styling client for a wardrobe analysis and there are pieces STILL WITH TAGS! Meaning they have never worn it. And, 9 out of 10 times the reason is they got it on sale or at a discount store and it was such a good deal. BUT THEY HAVEN’T WORN IT – so, P.S. it’s not a good deal, it’s just money spent with no return on the investment and, in addition, it’s taking up valuable closet space. Ok, I’ll get off of my soapbox now and dish on the deals and steals I’ve found.

One Summer Sales Note…

Did You Say SPRING SALE?

Every year Shopbop has this big spring sale. I’ve been writing about it year after year but somehow it never gets old. Probably because it’s timed perfectly for when we’ve all had ENOUGH of the winter stuff. And we are all anxiously ready and waiting for SPRING to arrive.

But What’s “IN” for Spring?

Sometimes looking at a sale ahead of the season (think Nordstrom’s Anniversary Sale) can be overwhelming. First, there’s so much to choose from. And then you’re not really ready to wear it yet. And lastly, a new season means new fashion trends, so it can just be a lot.

Let Me Help

Let this be a quick, down and dirty spring trend guide AND a pick of my favorites from the Shopbop Spring Sale

The Cyber Week Sales Round-Up

To be totally honest I have never been a big Black Friday shopper. Possibly because I am still in a major food coma on the Friday after Thanksgiving. And because I don’t love the crowds. Shopping is a peaceful experience for me. And the pushing, elbow in the ribs, the survival of the fittest kind of thing is not peaceful IMHO. But Cyber Week Sales, now that I can get into…

The whole switch from standing on-line at 5 am on Black Friday in order to save big and receive a door prize giveaway, to Cyber Week sales shopping from the comfort of my own couch has turned me (sort of) into a Black Friday(ish) shopper.

A Cheat Sheet for Cyber Week

There’s a part of me that feels like this post is a cop-out. I am EXHAUSTED and the holiday crazies haven’t even started. But I figured I’d love a comprehensive list of what sales are happening when. And maybe you would too. So that’s what I’m doing… let me know if you like it (or not). The format is a little different but I hope it can serve as a cheat sheet for you to alleviate at least some of the stress of the holiday crazies for you this season.

Shopbop Surprise sale - The Wardrobe Consultant

Shopbop Surprise Sale!?!?

I mean I like surprises and all. And I love a good sale. But this was a surprise for me too so, I didn’t get to plan this one for you guys like I usually do…
None the less, I perused all 1000 pieces and compiled my favorites – mostly pieces I have tried or seen in person. But there is A LOT that is part of this sale so do yourself a favor and check it out for yourself.

Shopbop is one of my favorite contemporary retailers. They carry a lot of quality pieces so this is a chance to scoop them up at a great price – UP TO 40%b off!

The Nordstrom Sale

Don’t Buy it Just Because it’s on Sale

I have a rule about sales and it’s true for the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale too. If you wouldn’t buy it at full price than don’t buy it on sale. For real. I can’t tell you how many peoples closets I’ve been in where there are clothes hanging with a tag still on them (like they’ve NEVER BEEN WORN!!) because “it was on sale”.

Bottom line, it’s not a deal if you’re not going to wear it or use it.

The great part about buying it from Nordstrom is that they pride themselves on customer service and have a very generous return policy. So, if you decide you don’t really like it, with Nordstrom, you can always return it.

Nordstrom Sale – What to Get

I LOOOVE that you guys gave me ideas on IG as to what you wanted to see from the big old Nordstrom Anniversary Sale this year. And as I said over on stories, I have a bit of #NSale fatigue this year. And it seems about half of you do too.

It may just be that I have summer brain (aka vacation) and a bit there is so much noise out there regarding this sale (sensory overload, like every blogger and their brother, and mother are talking and posting about it – so it feels saturated)

So my thought is this… to keep it short and sweet. And well organized so it is easy to shop.

I’m organizing my picks into 3 categories.

-CLASSICS –  Items I already own, love and stock up on at the sale
-TRY ON SESH – Items I saw in person and tried on
-Fall 2019 “trendy” pieces to add
If you want the low down on men, beauty, etc just let me know – I saw some good things but seriously don’t want to overwhelm.
