Hallie’s Hot List – June Edition

It’s summa, summa, summa time! Yahoo, right?!? And raise your hand if you got that Fresh Prince reference. I linked the music video for either nostalgia or education, depending on that hand raise, LOL!  The Hallie’s Hot List, June edition is focusing on the things I’m loving now that the weather has turned warm. It’s full of fun in the sun goodies that are vetted by me, tried and true.

Think, sunscreen, bathing suit coverups, sun hats, sundresses… You know, the things we all need and use this time of year but that can be hard to know what really works or not until you try.

What’s on the Hot List for June?

What’s Hallie’s Hot List?

Back when I started my blog I had a feature called Hallie’s Hot List. Think of it as my version of Oprah’s favorite things (but without the car giveaway – lol). It was really well received and I have no idea, at all, why I stopped doing it. But I feel like the time has come to resurrect it.

For example, when you have (or had if you’re still in quarantine) coffee with your friends and you, or they,  share some awesome things they found and that “changed their life”. Well, that’s what the hotlist is…  Things I use and love, or that my friends use and love. It’s the ultimate form of word of mouth, and therefore worthy of a relaunch.

In the virtual closet class I’m co-teaching, we ask the participants to share their favorite things. It’s been so fun finding out about other people’s tried and true items. And after a few classes, with some rock star women, Hallie’s Hot List has compiled a nice collection of favorites that, above all, have been vetted by ladies I trust.

Mother’s Day Gifts

Ladies can be super hard to buy gifts for. And mom’s in particular. Yes, we say we are happy with a handmade card or breakfast in bed. And we are. But, trust me, the effort of actually getting a gift for mom, especially at this time in history, when we are all cooped up, can make all the difference.

And if there are any guys reading this, ORDER SOMETHING NOW! The gifts your kids usually make in school and bring home are not happening this year – just FYI.

As women, we put our families first. And right now there is either a lot of cooking and cleaning happening (omg, in my house there is SO MUCH LAUNDRY!!). Or things are sort of lonely when you can’t see your loved ones because of quarantine. Neither is ideal, but it’s our collective reality.

Any way you slice it, we ladies need props. This is the time to cheer up the lady or ladies in your life. Mother’s Day, birthdays, just because I love you days. With health worries, and family worries, and money and job worries – you can spend a little or a lot and she’ll love it either way. Here are some gift ideas at all different price points I’m confident she’s gonna love.

You guys voted – and Reader Round-Up It Is!!

I’m not sure I can properly describe how thankful I am for the Instagram/Facebook/Blog community we’ve created together. Last week I put a call out for your suggestions as to what you’re making, reading and watching while we are all on lockdown and boy did we generate a kick a** reader round-up list!

And, not to be picky or anything but, the cleaning gadgets suggestions were a little lame, just sayin’…  it’s possible that I’m the only one looking for cleaning shortcuts right now. I keep feeling like Cinderella, from the beginning of the fairytale, and I’m searching desperately for those magic mice to help out!

Can Shelter in Place be a Happy Time?

Happy Shelter in Place week 3… That’s how an email exchange from one of my clients started. And I’ve been thinking about it. It’s not that I’m unhappy, per se, but rather that I’m uncertain. And that uncertainty is leaving me VERY unmotivated and uninspired creatively.

For instance, I have NO IDEA what to write about this week. All of the content I had lined up for you seems irrelevant and unimportant in light of the pandemic and subsequent isolation we are all facing. And so as I’m procrastinating writing (hello, I mean I have nothing else to do except clean toilets) I’m thinking about what I’d want to see if I were you reading this…And the answer is I JUST DON’T KNOW.

Even though stores are having CRAZY sales right now (like Nordstrom 40% off,  JCrew 40 % off, Madwell 30% off, Saks 25% off) it personally feels weird to shop for clothes right now considering there’s nowhere to go.

Making the Most of It…

For Now, It’s Quarantine Life

Cute comfy clothes and a pandemic quarantine is not what I was planning to write about this week. And I am sure being housebound is not how you were planning to spend your week (or weeks) either. But this is our reality right now and there are a few things that are helping me make the best of a rather yucky situation

Yes, I’m kind of freaking out, but I’m also trying to practice self-care and not put my current anxiety on my kids. Btw, pretty sure I’m failing on the latter, but I am trying…

Comfy Clothes

I’m 100% that person that changes into their comfy clothes the minute I get home. And for that matter take my bra off, as long as my kids don’t have friends over. And I’ve written about comfy clothes both HERE and HERE in the past. However, I think this whole quarantine thing gives comfy clothes a chance to be in the spotlight again… And many of you asked for it… So here ya go…

My 5 Go-To, Non-Boring, Wardrobe Staples

I was thinking about the pieces in my closet that were on the heaviest rotation. My favorites,  my best-of list. The pieces that I go to over and over again that never disappoint. What surfaced were 5 go-to, non-boring wardrobe staples that always give my outfits that finishing touch. And the perk is they’re timeless and THEY’RE ALL AFFORDABLE.

So what about these 5 wardrobe staples makes them so useful? And so versatile? IMHO, it’s because they’re pieces that easily add a little oomph to an outfit, BUT not so much oomph they couldn’t be worn again because they were just too memorable.

One important note – these pieces are available at all different price points. So, if you want to spend $20, $200 or in some cases $2000 you can find all 5 items at all of these prices, and everywhere in between. The looks will be similar but the materials used (rayon vs cashmere) or the designer label (Mango vs Gucci) are what account for the huge disparity in price. I’ve linked products that run the gamut price-wise, so be sure to click the photos to find the item and price that’s right for you.

Zara Leather Pant and Blank NYC faux fur coat

A Leather Pant, Really Hallie??

Ok, ok… I know, you might be bristling at the idea of leather pants. There’s something that feels very Sons of Anarchy, biker chick about them. But hear me out. As I was doing my own outfit planning this season I kept feeling like I was missing a key piece.  That my wardrobe needed that fun outfit for going out that was NOT jeans. But I also didn’t want anything as serious as slacks. What was I yearning for? That in-between pant that’s not too dressed up but not too casual either. My answer was a leather pant.

Now, when I say a leather pant, I do not mean those Spanx leather leggings that all of the 20-year-old bloggers are raving about. I am fine with those if they’re paired with a tunic and boots or even sneakers. But they are definitely a legging, NOT a pant. I don’t personally wear them either. Because I think they’re a pain in the a** to take on and off. I almost passed out just trying them on in the dressing room, it’s such a production. They’re kind of thick and tight, so you’ve got to shimmy them up and jump and wiggle.  And I drink way too much water to be futzing around every time I goto the loo.

What I was looking for was a real pant – a trouser style, but made of leather, or faux leather or even waxed denim that gives it a leather-like look, but at a friendlier price.
