Reader Questions Answered – Where can I find a casual summer dress?

You all know we LOVE when you write in with questions… Truly, some of our best and most popular blog posts come from YOUR questions. Like the “Is it OK to wear Pantyhose” post… it’s literally gone viral and is read by 2000+ people each week (crazy, right??)

A few weeks ago Molly sent in this question about casual summer dresses.

“I love your blog! Where can one find cute, flattering, well-made and affordable casual summer dresses? I struggle each year finding casual dresses for summer. I want something that I can wear out to dinner and drinks or to a backyard bbq. Everything I see in the stores is either practically sheer, requires no bra (I’m too old for that). shapeless (which makes me look like a pregnant blob or a square) or the fabric shows everything. Can you tackle this in an upcoming blog? Thanks!”

The Struggle is REAL

We’ve been running into the same issue with our one-on-one wardrobe clients as well. There are a lot of dresses out there but not a lot of the right kind of dress.

The last time we wrote about the day dress we focused on dresses as shorts alternatives. Meaning some of the ones we picked were short, or strapless or even a bit more expensive. But with this post, we’re changing it up…

What Molly’s looking for is a practical but nice looking summer dress. There’s a checklist of elements a dress has to have for us to put it on this list…

Remember going Passover or Easter Dress Shopping as a Kid?

It’s Spring – YAY! And that means the spring holidays are here. Along with the what to wear for Passover and Easter question. There’s something that feels ritualistic and traditional about getting a new dress for these holidays. It’s like a renewal for the season and makes the holiday feel special when wearing a new frock.

But that all being said, it can stress people out too. I remember as a little girl we’d go with my Grandma and shop for our Passover outfits – I so looked forward to that! Yes, I was a clothes lover even as a kid. My mom talks about taking the rapid downtown to Halle Bros department store and wearing white gloves for her holiday shopping trips. When I imagine it I totally picture a scene from Marvelous Mrs. Maisel but of course, set in Cleveland.

Today that Shopping is Done in Front of the Computer

Today, sad to say, I sit down with my kids in front of the computer and order what they need. Somehow that doesn’t have the same romantic quality as a white glove trip downtown – but it does the trick in today’s busy world. It’s family time but in a different way. At least that’s what I keep trying to tell myself.

And like most moms, I’m usually the last on the list – so if you don’t have your Passover or Easter Dress yet, don’t fret – I spent a little extra time in front of the computer shopping for you, and for me. And I found some great options!

Special but not TOO Special

One of the challenges of getting a dress for a holiday is that you want it to feel special, but not so special that you only wear it once. Ideally, you want to be able to wear it again throughout the year(s).

Alo Yoga-The Exercise clothing brand you NEED to know about.

I’m not much of an exercise person, although I am trying to change that for 2019. But, I know many of you are waaaay into fitness as well as exercise clothes, so it’s been on my “to blog about” list for a while now. And then, the other day Elana showed up at my house wearing THE CUTEST workout outfit – and her butt and thighs looked really good in the leggings too… I was obsessed and promptly placed an order.  Of course, you guys need to know about this brand and why it’s so great too. So Elana is taking over the blog this week to talk all things ALO…

Elana’s favorite exercise clothes

Wearing gym clothes outside of the gym wasn’t my thing.  I’d constantly worry that my butt might look too big, or the flab that hangs over my sports bra was showing. I’m good at hiding all of that under my regular clothes, but in exercise clothes I never found it to be so easy.  So, in the past, if I was buying clothing, I’d generally prefer it to be everyday stuff like jeans, sweaters, and t-shirts. This is the kind of stuff I felt good in. Which meant my exercise wardrobe was really lacking. I needed an update, like ASAP, so I turned to some pros.

Overalls, Really?!?

When I was in my 20’s and early 30’s I lived in, and lived for, a good pair of denim overalls. One of my favorites was a pair of size 16 from GAP kids I scored for $ 19.99, let’s just call that one of the benefits of being under 5’4″.
Then during my maternity years, overalls were a staple in the waxing and waning of my childbearing belly. 3 kids in 4 years and a 70 lb weight gain with each (yes, you read that right, scary but true) made them basically a necessity.
So, needless to say, overalls have a special place in my heart. Whenever I’d see them in a store I’d try, keyword here is TRY, to make them work. In the past they just make me feel like a wannabe teenage farmer – NOT the look I was going for – so I’d pass.

But, this year, We are LOVING them! For Real!

Recently, both Elana and I have been crushing on the whole overall, coverall, flight suit thing. They’re kind of like a jumpsuit, so it has the ease of all-in-one dressing.  But it’s a bit tougher than one made of silk. So it gives that uncomplicated, effortless, je ne sais quoi vibe. AND it easily transitions from sporty to cocktail just with a change of accessories.

My Full Proof Outfit for Fourth of July and Beyond

Happy July people! Summer is in full swing, so that means in addition to the Fourth of July events you have on your calendar, there are most likely some other outdoor, summertime, backyard bbq’s and things you have coming up.

Getting dressed for Fourth of July and backyard parties are the kind of thing that cause people angst and the kind of event dressing that trouble many clients when we first meet. That, and what to wear to funerals, but we will have to cover funeral attire in a separate post…

There are a few reasons outdoor summer parties and July 4th in particular, are such a pain to dress for…

The Search for White Jeans

White jeans, OMG, what are you doing to me?!? And, btw, it’s Hallie. Why am I OMGing? Because I have been on the search for white jeans this season and it’s efffing hard to find a good pair. Honestly, I didn’t expect it. I’ve always loved my white jeans, they’re a staple. A great way to “summer-ize” an outfit. They go with all of the current spring colors. And, they’re a super good cheat for those places you’re not allowed to wear blue jeans, like the country club, but you still want to wear jeans, because like I said, they’re a staple.

But this search has been painful and prolonged and slightly depressing. My love of pasta and dislike of exercise has finally caught up with me.  I knew I had gained some weight (thank you slowed metabolism) and I knew I had gotten older (thank you gravity). But I had not realized the material on white jeans had become so dang thin!

As we’ve been meeting with clients planning their spring and summer wardrobes, the need for a favorite white jean has been coming up again and again. And so has the frustration in finding a pair. White jeans, sort of like white tee shirts, need to be replaced every few years. Even if you use oxi clean to wash, the white just does not stay pristine after a lot a wear. And wearing yellowed white jeans is just ewww.

So, I’m taking you on my journey because maybe you too are looking for a great pair of white jeans this season. And while some may not work for me, they may work for you. I’m going in depth here folks – I’ll give you the nitty gritty on each pair and the kind of body that seems to work with each. I’ve tried a BUNCH on, and I’ve had clients try a BUNCH on, and I have some thoughts…

What to look for in a White Jean

Finding a favorite white jean is hard. It is a tall order to fill:

-Thick enough fabric that doesn’t show every nook and cranny
-But thin enough fabric that it is warm weather appropriate so you’re not literally sweating your a** off
-Slim in the leg but not too skinny
-High enough rise that it stops muffin top
-But not too high rise that it looks weird in the crotch
-Doesn’t show the front pocket thru the jean – ugh I hate how that draws attention to a woman’s widest part
-And in 2018, hits at the ankle with a bit of a kick

Well the good news is my stress is your gain – For both clients and myself, I have ordered, felt, seen and tried (or seen on) on like 40 pairs of white jeans in the last few weeks. And, thankfully, I have found some winners!

How to Make a Sheer Top Elegant

A few weeks ago Hallie walked into one of her fave local boutiques, Haven in Chagrin Falls. And this very sheer turtleneck top literally jumped into her hands! She loved it, but had some reservation. It was really sheer, and a turtleneck, so it could only be worn in the colder months. And it was kind of racy, like practically see through, so it would need to be styled in an elegant way. Because the “sexy” factor was high it was more P.M. appropriate than grocery store attire.
