Face Masks as Part of the New Normal

According to many experts, wearing a facemask will be part of our new normal for quite a while, thanks to Covid-19. This pandemic is not only changing how we behave (social distancing and sheltering in place) but what we wear (sweats all day and now facemasks) and even how we think.

So Many Questions About Masks

If masks are going to be part of our lives for a while (some say it could be for up to a year) there are a lot of questions about them. Not just from a health and safety perspective, but from a HOW DO I WEAR ONE AND STILL FEEL LIKE MYSELF, perspective.

Here are just a few of the questions I’ve received from both clients and readers..

Hallie Abrams and Sara Shookman style animal prints

Animal Prints are HUGE right now. Maybe too Huge.

Animal prints are forever chic. They’ve truly never gone out of style. But right now, the animal print trend is huge. Like maybe too huge. All you have to do is spit and you’ll hit an animal print something in every store you enter. There is not a retailer, from Target to Saks (and everywhere in-between) that hasn’t jumped, heavily, on to this trend. In some ways, it’s great, because you can find animal print pieces at all price points. But in some ways, it’s feeling kind of overdone and saturated.

And as one client recently said to me “5 years ago you had me wear my animal print pieces and I felt a little edgy and different. Now when I go out it seems like everyone is wearing it, it’s a sea of women in leopard and it all just blends together.”

So the question might not be How to Wear Animal Print BUT How to Wear Animal Prints and Make Them Uniquely Your Own for 2020… Because getting dressed is about communicating who you are. Not just looking like everyone else.

Mid-Calf Boots, REALLY??

When I say mid-calf boots are in, let me preface this by saying they are JUST hitting the scene. Meaning If you go to NY or LA you’ll see people wearing them. Brands like, Aquazzura, Isabel Marant and  The Row are making them. And stylists and Instagram girls are styling them. BUT mid-calf boots have not quite hit the mainstream yet. The operative word is YET…

This happens in all fashion but especially with footwear. Like, remember 4 years ago when I wrote about sock booties? Or 2 years ago when I wrote about white booties? When you first read those posts you might have been hesitant, thinking, does she REALLY know what she’s talking about?? But now I’m guessing both of these trends feel like do-able fashion options, RiGHT???

It’s challenging to adopt trends early, but the earlier they’re integrated into your wardrobe the more bang for the buck you get out if the pieces.  That being said, if a trend is adopted too early it can feel strange and like you’re being a poser – and that’s a crappy feeling. SO there is a sweet spot (which honestly is different for everyone) where it feels new and slightly edgy but not like you’re a total outlier.

How to wear Mid-Calf Boots…

Jeffrey Campbell snakeskin booties and plaid pants

Snakeskin for the WIN

Snakeskin is one of those things that never really went out of style. Kind of like animal print, it’s classic and a neutral… But right now it’s extra “in”.  Like you’re probably seeing it everywhere and at all price points too. And adding a touch to an outfit can make your old stuff feel NEW – even if the snakeskin stuff is the old stuff, like a bag, belt or shoes, it’s time to break them out again!!

Don’t Worry, It’s Not Over the Top

Some folks, especially my more classic style gals, tend to shy away from snakeskin thinking it’s too over the top. But just like a good leopard print, a snake accessory or even a snake print can work as a neutral with interest to make your outfit pop. Imagine an all-black outfit, classic but could borderline boring. Adding a snakeskin shoe or boot gives it just enough pizazz to make it feel interesting without being too much. The devil is in the details people and this season the detail to add is snakeskin.

How to Wear Snakeskin Right NOW

Depending on your personal style, you can wear a lot or just a touch of this print, and make it your own. Think of it like buildable makeup. You can layer more on if you want a bolder look (dress, skirt or pants), or conversely, apply just a touch (shoes, bag or belt) for a more natural look.

All that being said, there are a few rules to keep in mind when wearing snakeskin…

Light wash jeans and lavender TiBi blouse

Light Wash Jeans are VERY “In”…

Consider this post another page from the chronicles of The Wardrobe Consultant private clients… Lately, light wash jeans have been showing up on the shopping list of many of our clients. It’s mostly newer clients because we started sprinkling lighter washes into the wardrobes of our on-going clientele back in 2018. However, when we first make the suggestion, the questions are often the same. Maybe you’ll relate…

But, is light wash in?
Does light wash match? I think it’s hard to wear.
But will light wash make my, you fill in the blank (butt, thighs, stomach, calves) look big?
Can I wear a light wash in the winter?

The answers are YES, YES, NO and YES! In that order.

Light wash denim is an easy update

It doesn’t matter what style jean you favor, straight, skinny, boyfriend, paper bag, wedgie – they all come in a light wash option. And adding that lighter color to your jean repertoire is a quick and easy wardrobe update. And who doesn’t like quick and easy, right??

Now, let’s take each question/hesitation and address them one by one…

How to Make a Sheer Top Elegant

A few weeks ago Hallie walked into one of her fave local boutiques, Haven in Chagrin Falls. And this very sheer turtleneck top literally jumped into her hands! She loved it, but had some reservation. It was really sheer, and a turtleneck, so it could only be worn in the colder months. And it was kind of racy, like practically see through, so it would need to be styled in an elegant way. Because the “sexy” factor was high it was more P.M. appropriate than grocery store attire.
