What to Wear for the Holidays at Home – Outfit Inspiration

I mean, who the F knows that the holidays are going to be like this year. Thanksgiving was waaaaaay intimate over here (hello 3 people and a 15 lb turkey!). But it was still a holiday and I think there is something to be said for getting out of my grungy sweats and putting on my “dress up” sweats, or even a pair of jeans to make it feel like a day that’s more special than others. Holiday outfit inspiration is desperately needed this year to help make the holidays feel like, well, holidays.

So, whatever holiday(s) you’re celebrating – Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza, New Years’. And however many people you’re celebrating it with. I’m sharing a few outfit ideas to help make the days feel a little out of the ordinary.

It’s About the Outfit Inspiration, Not About Having to Buy New Things

I also want to keep in mind that while all of the items I’m showing and linking are available in stores, I never want people to feel pressured to buy. Hopefully, these serve as holiday outfit inspiration and you can re-create similar looks from pieces you already have in your closet. I mean, I do that all the time when I’m feeling uninspired. In fact, I keep a folder on my phone of screenshots from outfits that appeal to me. And I encourage my clients (especially new clients) to do the same.

Cheers, It’s Time for Summer Sales

Post 4th of July is usually the time in the fashion/retail calendar where the summer stuff goes on major sale. Why? Because stores are trying to clear things out to make way for fall merchandise. Even though this year has been anything but typical. The summer sales are still going strong. So it’s a great way to snag some key pieces at a deep discount.

Don’t Buy It Just Because It’s on Sale

However, my rule for styling clients, and that I’m sharing with you is: DO NOT BUY IT JUST BECAUSE IT’S ON SALE. An item isn’t a deal if it just sits in your closet. If it’s not adding, in a positive way to your wardrobe, it doesn’t belong there.

I can’t tell you the number of times I meet with a first time styling client for a wardrobe analysis and there are pieces STILL WITH TAGS! Meaning they have never worn it. And, 9 out of 10 times the reason is they got it on sale or at a discount store and it was such a good deal. BUT THEY HAVEN’T WORN IT – so, P.S. it’s not a good deal, it’s just money spent with no return on the investment and, in addition, it’s taking up valuable closet space. Ok, I’ll get off of my soapbox now and dish on the deals and steals I’ve found.

One Summer Sales Note…

Hallie Abrams and Sara Shookman style animal prints

Animal Prints are HUGE right now. Maybe too Huge.

Animal prints are forever chic. They’ve truly never gone out of style. But right now, the animal print trend is huge. Like maybe too huge. All you have to do is spit and you’ll hit an animal print something in every store you enter. There is not a retailer, from Target to Saks (and everywhere in-between) that hasn’t jumped, heavily, on to this trend. In some ways, it’s great, because you can find animal print pieces at all price points. But in some ways, it’s feeling kind of overdone and saturated.

And as one client recently said to me “5 years ago you had me wear my animal print pieces and I felt a little edgy and different. Now when I go out it seems like everyone is wearing it, it’s a sea of women in leopard and it all just blends together.”

So the question might not be How to Wear Animal Print BUT How to Wear Animal Prints and Make Them Uniquely Your Own for 2020… Because getting dressed is about communicating who you are. Not just looking like everyone else.

Evereve lightening bolt graphic t-shirt and zebra cardigan

EVEREVE is a store for Mom’s – But in a good way…

EVEREVE is NOT a maternity store. And it’s not your mother’s kind of mom store either. Meaning when folks use the term “mom fashion” it’s often meant as being comfortable and practical but looking dowdy and frumpy. But I can tell you that’s not what my readers want and it’s not what my clients want and thankfully that is not at all what EVEREVE delivers.

Maybe I’d describe it as a cool, casual mom vibe. Current and put together with a little bit of interest or edge. And age-appropriate, no crop-tops or thigh-high slits, but with just a touch of sex appeal. The chain founder, Megan Tamte, calls it “wholesome sexy – mom sexy… Hot and wholesome”

Think jeans, a graphic t-shirt, and a cozy cardigan. Or a cute cami and a leather jacket with a bootie.  But there are pieces for work, and going out too. A few dresses but not special occasion wear. Really the store is stocked with pieces that work for everyday life. Outfits to take you from carpool to a meeting, then to the grocery and straight to a sporting event and then to dinner out. Clothes that take you through your day and therefore through your life.
