A Stylist’s Recipe for Mixing Patterns Like a Pro

How to successfully mix patterns is a question that comes up ALL THE TIME with both female and male clients. It is probably because pattern mixing is one thing that, when done correctly, adds an inordinate amount of interest to an outfit. And when done wrong, well, it can be a total disaster.

Some people can naturally do it. They throw on this and that, and it looks effortless and flawless. It can seem like those people are everywhere, especially with the highlight reel of life that is social media. But in reality, those that can throw it on and go are few and far between.

How to Mix Patterns
Make it Look Effortless

Spoiler alert – most things that look effortless and flawless are the exact opposite. There is usually a whole lot of effort that goes into making something look effortless…

White jeans before Memorial Day.

We think that it is officially time to pack the heavy sweaters away until October. And at the moment, we’re not sad about it. However, it isn’t quite summer yet. And now the heavy sweaters are all packed up. So we get stuck in this weirdo time period of what to put on TODAY.  Like it’s a Tuesday and it’s 60 degrees outside.  It’s not 80 degrees yet, so we aren’t ready for dresses and sandals, and it’s no longer 30 degrees so we don’t need to be all bundled and stuff. So what do we wear? How about we dare say white jeans before Memorial Day.

Yes, we know what you are thinking. “BUT, I can’t wear my white jeans because it’s not Memorial Day yet”.  Wrong, and a total myth. When this weirdo weather hits all we want to do is feel refreshed and pull out our new pieces, but it just isn’t totally time yet. So, one way to reinvent the old before mixing in the new is to pull out your white jeans. Ya know those things that have been collecting cobwebs since Labor Day. (Oh, and these same rules apply for Labor Day, too.)

As long as there’s no snow on the ground or oodles of rain puddles, you can wear your white jeans, and wear them proudly. But there are rules to doing this so you don’t look too summery, or too wintry. There’s a real fine line to this transitional weather stage and making your white jeans work.

The 3 rules for wearing white jeans before Memorial Day…

Puffer coats are hot.

The puffer coat is hot right now. No pun intended, seriously.  They’re the most fashionable piece to hit the snowy streets in a while and they’re warm too! In September we were wishing for a little cold weather to bundle up in. Now that it’s here we can get right down to it. When deciding which piece of outerwear to add to your winter coat collection this winter,  a puffer coat should be top of your list.

They are all over in a range of colors, from brights to prints, and lengths from cropped to long, and thickness from more trim and structured, to bulky and thick.  So, no matter what your body type or style is there’s a puffer coat out there for everyone. And have no fear…you don’t need to worry about looking like the ever dreaded Michelin man when you choose the one that’s right for you.
