Are Nap Dresses Still In? Easy Breezy Summer Dresses

As we bask in the beautiful rays of another hot hot hot summer, women around the world are searching for the perfect outfit that effortlessly combines comfort and style. You may remember my blog post last summer, Summer Dresses with Ventilation AKA The Nap Dress + How to Wear Them. And you may wonder, if this style dress is still “in”, and if it’s okay to still wear your beloved flowy dresses. So, in this post, we’ll explore the enduring popularity of nap dresses, their timeless appeal, and why they continue to be the go-to choice for easy breezy summer dresses.

Are nap dresses still in style?

Yes, nap dresses are still very much in style! If you’re looking at the life cycle of a trend, I’d say that the nap dress is still on the rise. Despite being a part of the fashion scene since 2018, nap dresses have only truly made their mark since last summer. Since then, they have made a name for themselves as one of the key pieces of the larger cottagecore trend, which romanticizes a simple life closer to nature. But more importantly, this style of dress is easy to wear, fairly forgiving from a body-con standpoint and makes it easy to get dressed and look put together. And I am thrilled to confirm that these reasons and more, this type of dress is still considered on-trend this summer!

Be Trend Informed

And as a side note, the goal of us chatting about trends or items being on trend is to empower you to be TREND INFORMED. And honestly, it is probably part of a larger conversation, and possibly its own post. But to quickly address it… I do not believe in chasing trends! Especially trends that don’t work for you, your life, your style, your body or your budget. I do however believe strongly in being an educated consumer and a large part of that, specifically on the fashion front is being trend informend. Meaning you know what is trending and where it is in the trend cycle, so you can then decide, from a place of power, IF, (and it’s a big IF), you want to partake in the trend. As well as how invested in the trend you want to be.

Being trend informed allows you to make these decisions with knowledge. If you are aligned with the trends, then go for it. If not, then know you’re passing on them with no regrets. Make sure to let me know in the comments if you agree with this philosophy and if you’d like a post that goes more in depth on the topic.

Back to Nap Dresses

However, nap dresses have classic design elements that have stood the test of time. Unlike many fleeting fashion trends, nap dresses have an evergreen appeal that transcends seasons. While they are particularly popular during the summer months, they can easily transition into other seasons with the addition of layers or accessories. Their versatility ensures that they remain a staple in every woman's wardrobe, providing effortless style year after year.

Nap Dresses: Your Summer Staple

In case you missed the previous blog post, here's a quick recap. A nap dress is an easy, breezy dress that embodies an ethereal, Jane Austen-like feel. It's a style embraced by all women - from the trend-savvy Gen Z crowd, to women like myself, enjoying the fabulous 50's. They're similar to muumuus and caftans, providing ultimate ventilation and an undeniable sense of style, with some subtle differences.

Summer Dress Styles and Silhouettes

Not all summer dresses are created equal. Detailing the various styles and silhouettes such as maxi dresses, A-line dresses, wrap dresses, shirtdresses, or sundresses can help you find a style that works best for your body type and comfort level.

Material Matters

For the summer, opt for natural materials like cotton, linen, and chambray. They are breathable fabrics that will keep you cool even on the hottest days. While cotton and linen are natural, breathable materials perfect for hot weather, chambray gives the look of denim but is much lighter and breathable. Rayon, on the other hand, is a man-made fabric derived from wood pulp that has a silky texture and is also great for summer wear. Other man made materials may not be as easy to wear in warmer climates because of their lack of breathability.

Styling Tips for a Flowy Summer Dress

While our old tips still apply, here are some new styling suggestions to keep your summer dress game on point:

Embrace the Monochrome

Try a monochrome nap dress. This is a great way to make a simple yet strong fashion statement. Pair it with matching or nude accessories for a chic, streamlined look.

Ground it with Darker Accessories

Monochrome is a fantastic look. However, adding dark accessories, like black shoes, belt, bag or even sunglasses can give a look a modern vibe. Make sure there are at least two of these dark elements so it feels intentional.

Play with Textures

Look for nap dresses with interesting textures. Eyelets, lace, or even smocked detailing can elevate the whole look and make it even more exciting.

Experiment with Lengths

Don't confine yourself to long nap dresses. Explore midi and mini options as well. This gives your wardrobe diversity and also allows you to choose based on the occasion.

Shoe Pairing

This style allows for so many shoe pairings. Go conventional with sandals or sneakers. Or try pairing your nap dress with combat boots or espadrilles. This is a perfect example of the Rule of Juxtaposition, as it gives a stylish contrast and a more edgy look.

Accessorize Smartly

Play around with accessories. A statement belt can add a fashionable edge to a plain nap dress. A tasteful selection of jewelry can also work wonders.

So, yes, nap dresses are still very much in! They are the perfect summer style solution for us ladies who want to look fabulous while enjoying the warm weather comfortably. So, whether you're going on a picnic, or you're working from home, the nap dress is your stylish companion for the summer.
