Fall Fashion Trends 2024: The Wardrobe Consultant’s Style Guide
Fall gives me all the fashion feels. For so many, it’s their favorite time of year to get dressed and to shop. The runway shows were 6+ months ago, and now we get to see what the designers actually decided to produce, as well as what inspiration the ready-to-wear market took from the shows.
Every fall (and spring), I do a deep dive into the big fashion publications and retailers’ fall predictions. I look at the shows, see what the stores bought, and cross-reference everything. My goal is to come up with a list of wearable trends that real women can incorporate into their wardrobes (if they like) to help them feel informed and refresh their closets.
Because fashion is cyclical and works on a 7-10-year cycle, there is always some overlap. I divide my list into three sections:
Current trends: These are the items that are most popular right now. The trends can be found at many retailers and various price points.
Continuing trends: these pieces were on the list the last year or two and are still going strong. You may already have these in your closet, and you can still feel Modern and fresh wearing them.
Emerging trends: these are the new kids on the block. Often, these trends feel out there. The early adopters might wear them in the first year or two. But take note because if one of these resonates with you. By ”buying in” early, you’ll get the most bang for your buck and wear that trend on a cost-per-wear basis for longer than most.
Current Trends for Fall 2024
TRENDING SHOES
Glove Flats
Remember last year's beloved ballet flat? Well, it's gotten a sophisticated upgrade. The Glove Flat hugs your foot like, well, a glove! It's crafted from the most supple materials, making it both chic and oh-so-comfortable. Think of them as a modern art piece for your feet.
Tall Structured Boots
This isn't your grandmother's riding boot. We're talking a retro-inspired statement piece with a hint of moto-chic or even a touch of the Wild West. Pair them with anything from a flirty skirt to your favorite slim jeans, but remember, balance is key. Keep those proportions in check, and you'll be strutting with confidence.
TRENDING ACCESSORIES
Statement/Architectural Jewelry
Bold cuffs, geometric earrings, and chunky chains are dominating the accessory scene. Think of it as wearable art!. Embrace the "hardware trend" with pieces that showcase striking shapes and mixed metals. Let your jewelry do the talking and express your unique personality.
Studs
This compliments the statement jewelry/hardware trend, because it’s jewelry for your clothes. Studs add a hint of edgy attitude to any ensemble. Whether it's a studded leather jacket, a pair of embellished boots, or even a handbag adorned with metal accents, this trend is all about embracing your inner rebel.
TRENDING STYLES
Boho Style
This perennial favorite is a celebration of ease, romance, and artistic expression. Think flowing maxi dresses, embroidered blouses, and wide-leg trousers in earthy tones and rich textures. The beauty of boho lies in its ease and its adaptability. Even if your personal style leans towards the minimalist or classic, you can still incorporate a touch of boho spirit into your wardrobe with a statement necklace or a pair of fringed boots.
Country Core
Country core has a double entendre. It can be country as in western. We are seeing that in double denim and cowboy boots making a huge resurgence. But it also can be country as in the English countryside. Chore jackets, plaids, and scarves all embody this style.
TRENDING CLOTHING
Suede Jackets
The soft texture and rich hues of suede add instant warmth and sophistication to any outfit. Whether you opt for a classic bomber style in a vibrant jewel tone or a more tailored silhouette in a neutral shade, a suede jacket is a must-have investment piece that will elevate your fall wardrobe.
Slimmer Pants
After many years of moving away from skinny jeans and pants, we are seeing them gain popularity again. Please note that the slim pants of 2024 are different from the skinny jeans of a decade ago.
Today’s slim pants are slim through the leg, but do not remain super tight around the calf and ankle. It has less legging and more slim pants. One of the reasons this pant style is regaining popularity is because they pair nicely with the tall boots that are in style.
Cowl/Turtleneck Necklines
These cozy and elegant necklines are perfect for the cooler months. They offer a touch of sophistication and pair beautifully with a variety of styles. Think chunky knit turtlenecks for a casual-chic look or a sleek cowl neck sweater for a touch of understated glamor.
PRO TIP: If you don’t love the feeling of a turtleneck, try this little style trick!
TRENDING COLORS
Burgundy
This is the hottest color of season! It is an iteration of the red trend we saw last year (which is still going strong btw). Burgundy FEELS fall. And the darker hue is very fall-esque.
IMHO, if you add one item for fall, it should be something in this color!!
Brown
This rich color was gaining traction last year. And this fall it is full force brown - especially in accessories like bags and shoes. Bonus points for suede + brown!! From chocolate brown to camel, embrace this versatile color for a touch of natural elegance.
Continuing Trends
SHEER
The delicate allure of sheer fabrics continues to captivate. Layer sheer blouses or dresses over camisoles or slip dresses for a touch of ethereal beauty. Sheer items can read boho or edgy or even classic, depending on how they're styled.
LEATHER
Leather jackets, pants, and skirts remain wardrobe staples, adding an edgy and timeless appeal to any ensemble.
PREPPY STYLE
Classic plaids, crisp collared shirts, and tailored pieces keep preppy style in the spotlight this fall. Embrace this trend for a polished and put-together look.
FUR COATS/MOB WIFE AESTHETIC
Luxurious fur coats and faux fur options exude a sense of power and glamor. Channel your inner mob wife and embrace this bold trend.
QUIET LUXURY
Understated elegance is key with this trend. Invest in high-quality fabrics and timeless silhouettes for a sophisticated and refined look.
VESTS & BUTTON-UPS
Layering is essential for fall, and vests and button-up shirts offer endless possibilities. Mix and match them for a stylish and versatile wardrobe.
Emerging Trends
Jorts: Yes, you read that right. Jean shorts are making a comeback, but with a modern, high-waisted twist.
Animal Print (Zebra): This bold pattern is starting to gain traction. Incorporate it into your wardrobe through a scarf, a bag, or even a pair of shoes for a touch of wild style.
Retro/1960s Aesthetic: Think mod dresses, bold prints, and go-go boots. The swinging sixties are back with a modern twist.
Full Skirts: Embrace your feminine side with full skirts that create a playful and romantic silhouette. Pair them with a tucked-in blouse or a fitted sweater for a balanced look.
Olive Green: This earthy hue is a fresh alternative to traditional fall colors. It adds a touch of sophistication and complements a variety of skin tones.
Jackets that Nip in at the Waist/Belting: Jackets that are more oversized are getting an update by adding waist definition. This can be done design wise (as in purchasing a jacket that nips at the waist). Or by accentuating your curves to create a defined waistline with jackets by adding a belt to your favorites.
Gloves: Add a touch of old-world glamor and keep your hands warm with a pair of stylish gloves. Leather, suede, or knit options are all excellent choices.
