Should You Follow Fashion Rules?

Understanding the Purpose of Fashion Rules

Fashion rules have long been the backbone of styling. They are like the grammar of fashion language – essential for structure, but flexible in application. But when it comes to “fashion rules” - the response is usually a mix of “love them!” and “hate them!”

To me, it doesn’t matter if you follow these style rules or not. If you’re happy and comfortable with what you’re wearing and how you’re wearing it, that’s really all that matters! But, some people just like having a rule to follow. It provides guidelines and makes it easier to take on something that otherwise feels challenging. So, if you like a good rule here or there, this is for you! Let’s revisit some key rules we've covered in past posts:

The Rule of Juxtaposition

This is probably the fashion rule that I refer to the most. Mixing opposites – like feminine with masculine, or casual with dressy – leads to intriguing and dynamic outfits. It’s about balancing contrasts to create visually compelling looks.

The Fashion Rule of ONE

The rule of one is all about highlighting ONE thing at a time, allowing for a balanced approach to your outfit. This can be one area of skin, one fit (tight or loose in one area), or one color. It's a great guideline for creating outfits that are both stylish and tastefully composed.

Focusing on showing one area of skin means being selective about where/how much you’re revealing. Showing too much skin can make you feel over-exposed, but covering yourself all the way up can feel too modest. For example, a strapless top is elevated when paired with pants or a midi skirt. Conversely, wearing a longer sleeve top with shorts can balance out the look.

Focusing on one fit means only wearing tight (or loose) pieces in one area. For example, in this photo I am wearing an oversized sweater to balance out the slim-straight jeans.

Lastly, you can apply this fashion rule by focusing on one pop of color. Try to pick just one piece, in one color, and keep the rest of the outfit neutral. This pop of color, whether it is an accessory or a sweater, allows the piece to be the hero of your outfit!

The 2 Out of 3 Rule

In the 2 out of 3 rule, the focus is on color continuity. By ensuring two out of three parts of your outfit share the same color, you create an elongated, cohesive look. It’s a simple trick with a powerful impact on overall style. Here are a few examples:

top + topper = same color

Topper + Pants = Same Color

Top + Pants = Same Color

The Third Piece Rule

This is a fantastic trick for instantly elevating any outfit. The idea is simple: add a third piece to your basic top and bottom combo. This could be a blazer, a scarf, a statement necklace, or even a hat. It’s about that extra layer or accessory that adds complexity and finesse to your look.

The Rule of THREE

A mindful shopping guide. Before buying, consider if you can wear the item in three different outfits and on three different occasions. This encourages thoughtful, versatile wardrobe choices.

Why Rules Can Be Helpful

These guidelines offer a framework, especially for those feeling overwhelmed by the vast world of fashion. They simplify decision-making and provide a starting point for beginners. For instance, the Rule of Juxtaposition can be a lifesaver when you're staring at a wardrobe full of ‘nothing to wear’ – it encourages creative combinations you might not have considered.

The Art of Breaking Fashion Rules

Now, let's talk rebellion – the stylish kind! Fashion is an ever-evolving art form, and sometimes, the most memorable styles come from rule-breaking. Consider icons like David Bowie or Lady Gaga; their fashion narratives have been about defying norms and expressing individuality. The key is to understand the rules well enough to break them effectively. Want to mix prints? Go for it! Fancy wearing white after Labor Day? Why not!

Fashion Rules in the Real World

In daily life, fashion rules can serve as guidelines but should never feel restrictive. It's about finding what works for your body type, lifestyle, and personal taste. Fashion is deeply personal, and your style should be a reflection of your personality, not a set of prescriptive dos and don’ts.

Expanding Your Fashion Horizons

I encourage you to experiment. Take a basic rule and twist it. If the Rule of ONE suggests highlighting one body part, try an outfit that subtly plays with this concept, perhaps with sheer fabrics or clever layering. Use these rules as a launchpad for your creativity.

To Sum It Up: Your Style, Your Rules

In conclusion, fashion rules are valuable tools, but they’re not absolute. The most important rule in fashion is there are no hard and fast rules. Wear what makes you feel confident, beautiful, and authentically you.

I’d love to hear about your adventures in styling – how have you applied or bent these fashion rules to suit your unique style?
