The Must-Have Piece of the Season: Vests

Vests

If there's one thing I would buy for myself and recommend to my personal styling clients to add to their wardrobes this season, it's a vest. Even better, a vest set. Why? Because it instantly updates your entire wardrobe.

I’ve been talking about vests since 2021, when it started emerging in the trend cycle. A few of you early adopters joined me in the vest “trend” a few years ago. But it’s safe to say that vests have gained quite a bit of popularity over the last 2-3 years and have really gained momentum in the fashion world. So if you haven’t already invested in a great vest (or vest set), now is the time!

Vests are incredibly versatile, offering a variety of ways to wear them. You can wear the vest set together for a cohesive, polished look or break it apart to mix and match with other pieces in your closet. This makes it a wardrobe staple that adds instant sophistication and style, while still being comfortable in warmer weather.

Why a Vest is a Game-Changer

  • Instant Update: Adding a vest to your outfit immediately elevates your look. Whether you're dressing up for a meeting or going casual for a brunch date, a vest brings a touch of modernity and chicness.

  • Versatility: One of the biggest advantages of a vest set is its versatility. You can wear the set together for a coordinated look or break it apart to create multiple outfits. Pair the vest with jeans for a casual day out or with tailored pants for a more formal setting.

  • Comfort and Airiness: Vests are perfect for warmer weather as they provide an extra layer of style without the bulk. They offer breathability and keep you comfortable while still looking put-together.

  • Polish and Sophistication: A vest adds a layer of polish to any outfit. It's a simple addition that makes you look like you've put in extra effort, even if you're just throwing it over a basic tee or a simple blouse.

How to Style Your Vest

Together as a Set

For a streamlined and sophisticated look, wear the vest and its matching piece together. This creates a cohesive outfit that looks effortlessly chic.

With Jeans or Tailored Pants

Pair the vest with your favorite pair of jeans for a casual yet stylish ensemble. This combination is perfect for weekend outings or casual Fridays at work. For a more formal or office-appropriate look, wear the vest with tailored pants. This combination exudes professionalism while still being stylish.

Over a Dress/Skirt

Add a vest to a simple dress to give it a new dimension. It can transform a basic dress into a more fashion-forward piece.

Over a Shirt

If you’re hesitant to wear sleeveless styles, you can throw a vest over a shirt, old school style. I’m ok wearing sleeveless, but if you’re not, I love pairing a vest over a short sleeved t-shirt. As well as over a blouse for a more polished look.

Shop Vests

There are 3 main types of vests that you’ll find. They all deliver the same fashionable punch — it’s just about finding the type that feels right for you!

Tailored Vests

These are the most “typical” type of vest. They work on their own, under a blazer, or over a blouse.

Sweater Vests

Sweater vests are a softer material. Becasue they are knit, they work best with other tailored items and may not play nicely with other knits (unless it is a set).

Sleeveless Blazers

Sleeveless blazers serve more as a topper or a third piece, while still delivering that vest-like feel.

Investing in a vest set this season is a smart move for any fashion-savvy individual. It’s a piece that not only updates your wardrobe instantly but also offers endless styling possibilities. Whether you're dressing up or down, a vest adds that extra touch of polish and sophistication.

So, the next time you're looking to add a versatile, stylish piece to your collection, consider a vest set. Trust me, you won’t regret it.
