When you google “what to wear on new years eve” pictures and posts featuring skimpy, sparkly party dresses flash on the screen. But, what if you don’t want to wear a dress on New Years Eve? It is winter and all, and it’s too cold outside to bare that much skin. (Even if you’re vacationing down south, it still gets cold at night.) And, if we’re being honest, at a certain age, skimpy dresses are better saved for the “kids” or the Kardashians, don’t you think?
Or, maybe your New Years Eve plans consist of going to a friends house to celebrate and you want to wear something festive but a little comfier for the evening. These are the questions and scenarios I get asked by my clients, and the answers I try to provide as stylist for REAL people.
What DO you wear on New Years Eve, to feel special, glittery, warm, comfortable and still put together?
The general answer is to add a bit of sparkle or shine, it could be a skirt, or fabulous earrings or even a scarf. But, this year I’m favoring a top that has some sparkle. Why? Because there are so many great ones to choose from this season . AND because adding just this one piece, checks off every adjective on your “how I want to feel/look” for New Years list. AND you can wear it after New Years Eve to give your Saturday night outfit a fun and flirty vibe. Mix up your sparkly top, to give it life beyond NYE. The best thing about wearing a sparkly top to bring in 2019 is that it can be worn multiple ways in the future. This usually works better with tops than it does with a party dress anyway. A party dress is usually only changed up by accessories and shoes. But a great top can be paired back to lots of different bottoms, toppers, shoes AND accessories. So your new top can be worn for New Years Eve and beyond without worry about whom might have seen you in it. Your friends will be impressed that you mixed it up!
It’s so funny because clients have told me that they’d never wear a piece again because they were spotted on Facebook or Instagram in it. And, I totally, totally, get it. But, then I give the piece new life by mixing it up and it feels like new again. So, the same goes here for the sparkly top for New Years 2019. Stretch it’s life for the year to come with these easy style tips.
Style Tips
1. Try a sparkly top with any of these…a pair of waxed denim, leather pants, or boyfriend jeans.
2. If you’re a freeze baby try your new top with a leather jacket. FYI, and this is important…if you’re wearing a waxed denim or leather bottom a leather jacket is a no, no. Unless you’re going to a biker bar, try a soft topper like a boyfriend cardigan.
3. Mix up your new top with a pointed toe sock bootie in the winter, and try a pretty pump when the snow melts.
4. A sparkly top doesn’t have to be worn super dressy. Casual accessories like a brassy necklace or bracelet will help dress the top down.
