Cold Weather Essentials: Stylist-Approved Winter Jackets

Well, it’s official, this week (at least where I live), we went from the high 60’s to the low 30s and snow in a couple of days - the cold weather has arrived!
Yes, I know it’s mid-November. And I know I live in the Midwest where historically, we’ve already had weeks of cold and rain leading up to snow by this time of the year. But, nonetheless, the cold always comes as a shock.
The one redeeming quality of this cold, snowy weather is that we can finally break out our cute outerwear - coats, shackets, and jackets. You know, those cold-weather essentials that keep you warm and looking good at the same time.
I have a definitive philosophy when it comes to outerwear, especially for those of us that live in climates with a distinct change of seasons. Often your outerwear is a piece you wear all the time, for months on end. And if you’re like me, you probably rarely take it off when you are going about your day… Grocery store (keep it on), Shopping Mall (keep it on), coffee with friends (keep it on), bus or train (keep it on) - this item of clothing gets a significant amount of attention. So, IMHO it makes sense to treat your outerwear as an extension of your outfit.
Now it would be unrealistic, from both a space and budgeting perspective, to have a gazillion coats in your wardrobe. However, adding a new piece or two every year can help keep things feeling fresh and adds variety to your cold-weather essentials rotations.
Fun and Fashionable Jackets
Lucky for me (and you), this year, I found the most fun and fashionable jackets at Walmart. And at these prices, I’d even consider getting a few!
As a proud fashion nerd, one of the things I appreciate most about Walmart is how they’re democratizing fashion. Current, “on trend,” modern clothes, the pieces the fashion set is coveting - that’s the stuff I’ve seen at Walmart lately. So much so, that it was a little hard to pick my favorites to post about.
3 Essential Outerwear Pieces
Depending on where you live, these pieces may serve you as outerwear all winter long. Or if you live somewhere really cold, they may be your outerwear in the fall and spring and your third piece in the super cold months. Then you’ll put a parka over it for commuting/outdoor exposure. These are all stylish and functional enough to serve in both roles - as dictated by your lifestyle and location.
The Shacket
The term shacket, meaning shirt/jacket, has been on every “it” girl’s wish list for a few years now. I am personally fond of this one for two reasons…The fun, the unexpected color combo makes it feel feminine. Sometimes shackets make me feel like the Brawny Towel man, so the orange/fuchsia combo absolutely cancels out all lumberjack vibes. Also, this shacket is really soft and cozy. Even somewhat drapey, so it again feels flattering and feminine. Basically - I’m loving it!
The Leather Moto
A leather moto jacket, while possibly edgy for some, is really a workhorse wardrobe staple. If you already have a black one, adding a color, like this green, can really add some pop. And if you don’t have black yet, this jacket also comes in black (as well as a burgundy color called tawny port). It is quite supple and feels more expensive than its $45 price tag.
The Oversized Shearling
Nothing says chic cozy like shearling (faux or real). I died when I saw this Kermet the Frog green color - it’s so amazeballs. And never fear, it also comes in black. Oversized jackets are the “big thing” this year, and Walmart spotted and executed the trend perfectly. This jacket is soft and stylish.

I liked this one so much that I picked it up twice. The green one is a great statement piece, but the black looks so chic. I love how the all-black outfit allows the turquoise boots to pop!
The Outfits (all the details)
All of these outfits, head to toe are from Walmart, even the uber cool silver booties!
Honestly, I’ve not worn Walmart jeans until now - this style is the 90’s relaxed style. It fits tighter in the waist and roomier in the hips. I’d say it compares to the AGolde 90’s pinch waist jean - but at a much friendlier price.
While a white tee might not seem like a big deal I can not tell you how often I am asked for white tee recommendations - they’re like an elusive holy grail item ladies are always searching for. This one has a great slim neck band so it feels elevated. And the fabric is not see through - often a deal breaker for white tee’s.
Now can we talk about these silver boots?? I mean… Scoop does it again - totally on point (western but chic is very “in” right now) and they’re comfortable too boot (see what I did there!!) They run true to size and also come in black and burgundy.
The black dress is a little body con, but not uncomfortable so. I REALLY like it! Lightweight and the perfect midi length. And it’s $16!!
And those turquoise stovepipe boots are the bomb! In addition to being great looking they’re easy to walk in.
Last but not least, the silk “going out” top, stiletto ankle booties and faux leather pants - this would look equally great on it’s own with out the shacked too.
I found all of these items to run true to size. I am 5’4” and 127lbs. I wore a small in the tops/dresses, a 2 or 4 in the bottoms and a 7 in the shoes. Hope that helps!
